Ages look simple until you try to get them exactly right. This page explains how AgeExplained calculates ages, where our birth dates come from and how we handle the tricky cases.
Where our birth dates come from
Before a profile goes live, we confirm the date of birth in at least two independent, reliable sources. We prefer primary sources such as official websites, agency or label profiles, sports federation records and interviews in which the person confirms their own birthday. Fan wikis and social media posts alone are never enough.
How the live age works
Every age on AgeExplained is calculated in your browser when you open the page. We compare today’s date with the date of birth and only add a year once the birthday has actually arrived. That means our ages update automatically at midnight on each birthday, with no manual edits needed.
The rules we follow
- Age is counted in completed years, the international standard
- A birthday counts from the start of the day in your local time zone
- People born on February 29 turn a year older on March 1 in common years
- Ages at past events are calculated from the exact event date, not just the year
International age and Korean age
In June 2023 South Korea officially adopted international age for legal and administrative use. Before that, many people also used the traditional counting age, in which you are 1 at birth and add a year every January 1. We always show international age first and explain the traditional counting age where it helps, for example on K-pop profiles. You can see both systems in our exact age calculator.
